With holiday parties in full swing it makes you wonder is it possible to celebrate the season without packing on the pounds? I asked Amand Foti, Senior RD of Selvera Wellness, for 3 eating methods to incorporate for the rest of the month which will ensure a healthy and happy holiday season. Here are her tips:

  1. Cut down your portions. Most of us grab well over a recommended serving size. Consistently eating a bit more than you should can add up quickly. It only takes a couple hundred extra calories a day to gain weight.
  1. Drink water! Dehydration can cause unwanted food cravings, decrease metabolism, and even affect our energy levels. Drink at least 48-64 oz. a day! Try herbal tea on the colder days to mix it up a bit.
  1. Make sure you have a protein source, like eggs, greek yogurt, beans, chicken, fish, and nuts, and a fiber source, mostly fruits, vegetables and whole grains at every meal. This will help keep you full and keep your metabolism up. Remember to eat something every 3-4 hours whether it’s a meal or snack.

11 Surprising Ways to Use Coconut Oil

  1. Intensive treatment for dry hair: work into wet hair, cover with a shower cap and leave on for up to 30 minutes; rinse and shampoo as usual
  2. Stimulate hair growth: massage into scalp
  3. Fight frizz: use a small amount in your hair for instant control

Oil Pulling: A Natural Way to Whiten Teeth

What is oil pulling? Cosmetic dentist Dr. Jessica Emery, DMD, owner of Sugar Fix Dental Loft Chicago, explains how to use this ancient technique to improve your smile.

There is nothing more splendid and virtuous then unrefined coconut oil. It is a hot topic now coming back from the ancient days of tradition. ‘Oil pulling’ is a technique used to clean your teeth and mouth. You place a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish with it for up to 20 minutes. When finished make sure you spit into a trash can and not the sink as it can clog the pipes.

People swear by it, that it can fill cavities, relieve toothaches, whiten teeth, freshen breath, absorb harmful bacteria and even say it cures the common cold. From a dentist’s perspective, tooth decay is caused by bacteria and studies suggest that coconut oil treated with enzymes (which is like the process that occurs when you have oil in your mouth), the enzymes in your saliva break down. It seems to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria. So a good thing. Patients that have oil pulled have said that they ‘love how their mouth feels after swishing and that it lasts all day”. They also say that tooth pain is not gone but better. Makes sense to me as we use Vitamin E oil to sooth the gums and clove oil to sooth tooth aches. They work. I have not tried oil pulling personally but think I may jump on the bandwagon to see for myself. No solid proof that it works but it certainly makes people feel better. Your cheeks may get tired but I say ‘swish away’.

Red Carpet Workout: 5 Easy Ways to Get Fit While Watching the #Oscars

Don’t be a couch potato while watching the 2014 Oscars. Shana Schneider, fitness expert and Founder of FITWEEK, created a great workout you can do from the comfort of your living room while watching the red carpet arrivals.

All you’ll need are hand weights and a pair of heels!

  1. If you like the dress the actress is wearing, do 10 straight leg kicks alternating between the right and left legs.
  2. If you don’t like the dress, stand up and do 10 cross body jabs alternating between the right and left arms.
  3. On commercial breaks, put on your heels. Sit on the floor and do a V-sit. See if you can hold it for the full break with your legs fully extended. You can also bend your legs so they’re in a 90-degree angle to make it a little easier.  (The shoes are really just there so you have something cute to look at.)
  4. When the actor or actress appears whom you think is going to win, do 10 cross body standing crunches. Reach up with your left hand; bend your left arm and raise your right knee so they meet; put them down, then do this on the opposite.
  5. Whenever they ask “Who are you wearing?” do 10 squats. Stand 6-8 inches away from your couch or chair and as you squat, just barely touch your butt to the seat and then stand back up and squeeze those glutes. On the 10th one, sit back down and enjoy the show or at least until the next exercise starts!

Bonus – for those who are watching the red carpet on E!

  • When they use the Mani cam, grab water bottles or hand weights and do 12 reps of biceps curls.
  • When they use the 360 cam, stand up and do 10 leg circles on each side. Just trace a circle on the floor with your toe pointed. Feel free to do this one with those heels on, too!
